Saudi Arabia - Car thief’s trail leads to fake engineer

By ARAB NEWS
JEDDAH: A case of a car, which was stolen by an Arab expatriate in Jeddah, led to the discovery that the thief had forged his university degree.
He was able to work as an engineer for more than 30 years at a contracting company that implemented a number of housing projects in Jeddah and Makkah in addition to providing engineering consultancy to a number of government and private establishments, local daily Al-Madinah reported.
An owner of a car showroom in Jeddah informed the police station of Al-Salama district that one of his BMW cars was stolen. The police made intensive investigations that led to the arrest of the thief and his accomplice. The investigating officer also discovered that the thief had a forged university degree in engineering with excellent grades.
The accused broke down during questioning and told police that he was working for a contracting company as an architect making designs and blueprints for construction projects.
Spokesman of Jeddah police Brig. Misfer Al-Juaid said the expatriate and his accomplice admitted the crime. He said the keys of the stolen car were found with the thief along with copies of his fake university degree in engineering with excellent grades.
“The thief was sent to prison and his case was handed over to the Prosecution and Investigations Commission (PIC),” he added.
The spokesman said the PIC would address the contracting company to find out the projects in which the fake architect had worked.
Meanwhile, chairman of the contractors’ committee in the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abdullah Ridwan said the committee was ready to help the PIC in uncovering the projects in which the accused had worked when an official request was received from it. “Our role is only advisory. We will inform the authorities concerned of our findings,” he said.
Ridwan said a number of fake engineering degrees had been discovered lately by the Saudi Authority of Engineers. “The authority will not permit any engineer, including Saudis, to take any engineering job in the Kingdom before subjecting him or her to a competency test and before thoroughly checking his or her certificates in addition to field experiences,” he added.
